Contemporary Country House – Saffron Walden

About This Project

The clients of this stunning RIBA award winning property first contacted us in 2017 after purchasing the plot and asked if we could assist with the landscape design and planning process in the first instance. From here a design was developed and Tristen Knight Garden Design oversaw and project managed all elements from the initial site clearance by tree surgeons to the landscape construction and installation of all soft landscaping to complete the site.

Due to the topography of the site having a 10m drop from the top of the site to the house location, this presented an ideal situation to create three distinct terraced areas and a series of meandering paths tying it all together. The creation of the garden involved the redistribution of over 1000 tonnes of soil which was excavated during the house construction. This not only saved the clients a huge expense removing from site but allowed the new ‘terraces’ to be created with no material being imported.

The style of the garden is very natural and flowing to complement the natural woodland feel of the rear garden and this has been reflected in the prairie planting style which gives a wonderful long season of interest. The hard landscaping materials have also been chosen to sit sympathetically with the landscape allowing the soft landscaping to take centre stage.

This site continues to evolve and we are delighted to continue working alongside our clients and watch this enchanting garden establish alongside the beautiful property.
